We work hard throughout our lives to carve a better future for ourselves. We work for food, shelter, clothing, and education, and we also set aside some money for travel and leisure. Most Americans look forward to their retirement years, when they can most enjoy the fruits of their labor. But to enjoy life, it’s essential that we have good health.
Good health is central to our lives. But let’s face it: The food choices we make aren’t always the smartest; coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, these choices can lead to medical issues—more so as we age. To counteract the health and medical challenges people face as they enter their retirement years, the government provides Medicare plans for people aged 65 and up. However, the basic health care package offered by Medicare doesn’t always meet the specific medical requirements of each person.
The good news is that apart from the basic health care plan, Medicare offers you the option of purchasing additional coverage through Medicare supplements. What are Medicare Supplements, and how do they work?

Medicare supplements are optional coverage plans, each of which offers a package of services to Medicare enrollees. These plans are available through private insurance companies and are regulated by the federal government. To date, there are ten types of medical supplement plans for you to choose from. Coverage benefits per plan are standard in keeping with government policy, but premiums vary across insurance companies.
Before you can buy Medicare supplements, you have to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, which cover basic hospital and medical benefits. Generally, only U.S. citizens aged 65 and up are eligible for enrollment. Some disabled people under 65 and people of all ages with end-stage renal disease, however, are also eligible for Medicare coverage. Once enrolled in Medicare, you can opt-in to any Medicare supplement plan that will help cover most, if not all the health benefits you need.
Medicare supplements are not mandatory, but for an extra premium you can expand your health coverage significantly. If you think that you need more health resources aside from those provided by the government, turn to Medicare supplement companies to get the additional health support you need.
