Democrats with Vision

Hat tip to Jason at Leave Us Alone. Dennis Kucinich, still running for the White House, is at least bold in going after the War on Drugs and calling for an end.

I have studied the issue for decades and recognize that our "War on Drugs" has failed. In fact, because our War on Drugs drives up the price, it encourages violence. Prohibition simply doesn't work. It only creates thousands and thousands of Al Capones. Prison should be for people who hurt other people, not themselves. We don't jail people for merely drinking. We jail people when they drink and drive or hurt another human.

Too bad his economic views aren't better. But on the subject of bold, is there any way we can convince Russ Feingold to reconsider his decision not to run in 2008? Because we need leadership like this:

Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., has scheduled a hearing next Tuesday in his Judiciary Committee subcommittee to explore whether Congress has the authority to cut off funding for the U.S. military campaign in Iraq. The move comes as Congress prepares to vote on a congressional resolution opposing President Bush's escalation of the war.

Feingold, a fierce war critic, will force Democrats to consider an option many consider politically suicidal: cutting off funds for the military campaign in Iraq. Democratic leaders have privately called on members to restrain from seeking any funding restrictions and focus instead on congressional resolutions condemning the Bush policy. The resolutions are nonbinding and therefore symbolic.

I see the nonbinding resolution as a good first step toward getting a number of Republicans on record in opposition to the President's plan, but the Democrats need to continue to push on this subject and do everything possible to block this escalation.
