Checking up on Bill Richardson

More than once, I've heard of a decision by Bill Richardson that, on the surface, I strongly disagree with. I've checked into these cases, and been satisfied with how Richardson handled the situation. I'd like to report my findings:

  1.  Eminent domain: Soon after the Kelo decision, Gov. Richardson vetoed a bill that was intended to limit the abuse of eminent domain. Richardson claimed that the bill was poorly written and he immediately convened a task force, which drafted new legislation restricting the use of eminent domain. It seems that this bill has provided reasonable protections.
  2. Mandatory vaccines: Richardson recently signed a bill making the HPV vaccine "mandatory" for girls entering the 6th grade. However, no permission is requred to opt out of this "requirement", though there are a couple of small hoops to jump thru (according to one news story I read), so I'm not fretting over it.

Here's a report on the NM Gardasil legislation, including some info on the opt-out provision. The link has been added to the main story.

Thanks!
