Newt Gingrich: Reconciling "Americanization" at Home and the Bush Doctrine Abroad
On Sean Hannity's radio show, Newt called the recent Senate Immigration Bill a "complete sellout of conservative principles." When it comes to immigration at home, Newt ascribes to the notion of "americanization," that is, the idea that democratic valus are not innate, but must be inculcated and learned from a process of assimilation. Quoting Newt:
"It is clear what the Founding Fathers had in mind. To become an American citizen meant becoming an American in values, culture, and historic understanding. Citizenship was something to be studied and acquired, not merely a piece of paper to be granted."
Okay, fair enough. In such light, you can understand Newt's problem with an "amnesty bill," and his opinion that an overun of Mexican immigrants, who, by nature, don't share democratic ideals is a threat to the American way of life.
But what about the American Enterprise Institute Newt, the Newt that calls on the use of American Military Power to spread democracy in the Middle East, defeating the jihadists and tyrants in order to unleash an innate, pro-democracy, pro-market people to form western style democracies. I kid you not, and I'm directly quoting from Newt with respect to the Palestinians:
"The United States should also prepare to spend money and effort to help the Palestinians create a better future. We need a hard-headed carrots-and-sticks approach, which encourages the growth of a pro-peace, pro-prosperity, and pro-freedom wing of the Palestinian people."
What the fuck, Newt? The Mexicans are nothing but a threat to suck off the tit of our welfare state while you see a potential Adam Smith wing of the Palestinian people?
For Newt, Sean hannity, and the majority of the GOP, the utter absurdity of their hypocrisy apparently escapes them. Abroad, use our military to force regime change and foster an innate desire for democratic government. At home, in our own hemisphere, militarize our borders to keep all the scum out and prevent the scum from undermining our democracy, because they haven't been "Americanized."
The GOP is simply intellectually bankrupt.
