2008 Endorsement: Darcy Burner
In the March 8th special election in the Illinois 14th Congressional District, Democrat Bill Foster won by a strong margin in a district that had previously supported George W. Bush in both 2004 and 2008. This was, after all, the seat held by former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. A Democratic victory here was a resounding success. Bill Foster's stance against the Iraq War and against telecom immunity in such a red district is all the more inspiring.
Democrats can win in Republican areas without taking the neoconservative position in support of the War on Civil Liberties. The Iraq War is universally unpopular, there is no reason for Democrats to be timid and support the President in keeping troops in Iraq indefinitely. That is why I'm proud to support Darcy Burner in her bid to represent the Washington 8th district. Darcy Burner is the type of Democrat who will stand up against the Iraq War and the erosion of our civil liberties, as demonstrated by these two videos.
Darcy Burner is generally liberal, and so supports universal health care and other economic ideas we may disagree with. But she is not afraid to stand up on the issues that matter, stopping the War and protecting our civil liberties. This is not a question of simply "more Democrats," as those on the left push for. This is a question of "better Democrats," and Darcy Burner is a "better Democrat" than the establishment in Washington that rolled over when the neoconservatives gave a push.
