Strange Bedfellows: The Progressive-Libertarian Alliance

Yesterday, Adam referenced the Blue America PAC that is targeting Blue Dog Democrats like Steny Hoyer for their continued roles as complicit enablers of Bush's sham FISA bill. However, it should be noted that a more encompassing movement effort has recently sprung up, forged by both progressive and libertarians that will be using the Blue America PAC as a Phase I of of a multi-Phase strategy. It's being dubbed the Strange Bedfellows alliance. The headliners in this alliance are the ACLU, Glenn Greenwald, The Ron Paul Money Bomb team over at Break the Matrix, Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake, Matt Stoller of Open Left, and Ari Melber of The Nation.

The news of this new alliance broke on several blogs somewhat simultaneously, but this is how Glenn Greenwald described it:

So Phase I, to begin immediately, will focus on ad campaigns against two Democratic pro-amnesty incumbents with no primary challenger (Hoyer and Carney), and one pro-amnesty Democratic incumbent with a credible primary challenge very shortly. Phase II will involve a massive money bomb, to be planned by the same people who were behind the money bombs that raised millions and millions of dollars for the Ron Paul presidential campaign. The dates and other details for that will be announced shortly.

The plan there is to raise an extraordinary amount of money -- dwarfing the $90,000 raised in the last 24 hours -- by going to all of the various constituents of each member of this coalition in order to fuel a real campaign in defense of civil liberties, constitutional protections and the rule of law. The money raised will be used to oppose and punish those vulnerable members of Congress who continue to support the evisceration of our constitutional framework and core civil liberties, while supporting candidates and office-holders who meaningfully oppose that assault.

Break the Matrix Press Release is here

I wrote last week that the Democratic Party is far from a lost cause for freedom lovers in America. Not the corrupt establishment leadership of the party, of course-- those people are lost forever. Nancy Pelosi should always be remembered for her "impeachment is off the table" comment regarding George Bush, and Steny Hoyer (Democratic House Majority Leader) has now become the driving force behind a bogus "compromise" on a Republican sponsored bill that would create vast new warrantless eavesdropping powers in the President and grant amnesty to lawbreaking telecom companies. These people-- the Pelosis and Hoyers of the world-- are beyond saving, but there's a new movement growing in the Democratic Party among online bloggers and freedom lovers who stand strongly in favor of constitutional rights and civil liberties.

.....

As a "for profit" company, BreakTheMatrix will not be contributing to candidates for political office, but we'll be waging the fight for civil liberties in other ways through Strangebedfellows. We're joining with the left to stand for constitutional rights, so who says the Democratic Party is dead where freedom is concerned? Not us.

So, apparently, Phase I will be using the Blue America PAC for immediate targeting of Steny Hoyer while Phase II will be using Break the Matrix to coordinate a Paul-like Money Bomb, the proceeds of such being distributed to various candidates who support civil liberties, either from the left or right. Greenwald promises significant new additions to the alliance to be announced shortly. To the extent that this takes off, it could potentially represent a new type of political realignment of sorts, one not necessarily revolving around political parties but rather around the NetRoots vs the Political, Corporatist Classes of both major parties. As has been discussed previously, a Progressive-libertarian alliance built around a type of Libertarian Class Theory likely offered the most promising avenue for success. The Strange Bedfellows alliance seems to confirm this.

I have signed up for Strange Bedfellows here.

Dem leadership sells us out

There are a couple of prominent articles at DKos on this issue:

  1. Telecom Amnesty AND Expanded Eavesdropping Powers: Great Work, Congress! This essentially posits that their support of the new FISA law was part of a deal so that they could get domestic spending into the war-funding bill.
  2. FISA: Jonathan Turley says, Dems are protecting THEMSELVES. This posits that Democratic leaders would be legally liable for participating in the illegal spying scheme (I am not a lawyer, but I doubt it).

What about economic liberty

I applaud the efforts to combat FISA, however, I sincerely doubt the progressive element of this alliance is very serious about supporting the libertarian concept of liberty, which includes economic liberty as well. The government can still conduct surveillance on citizens through tax documents, balance sheets, and banking transactions. Civil liberty without economic liberty does not equal liberty. Freedom from government intervention in our civil liberties, while it intervenes in our economic liberties still makes us share croppers. Hopefully, the progressives in this alliance will recognize that economic liberty is as equally important as civil liberty.
