Palin's Speech...
Palin opened her speach telling the Republican convention about herself, with the mayorship and governorship. She then went on to mention her family, and how great they were. She then went on to mention her ticket mate, McCain, in an all but godly manner.
Midway through the speech, however, she resorted to the recent favorite Republican strategy; attack. She babbled on aimlessly that somehow (maybe God's gifts? I'm sure that would have appealed to her Evangelical friends) she has more experience than Obama. She claimed that "a mayor is kind of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities".
Sadly, others at the convention also attacked Obama. Namely, Rudy Guliani. He once again claimed falsely that Obama used the "present" vote 160 times in the Illinois State Senate as a pass. Technically, if anyone was kind enough to inform the former Mayor of New York City, that a "present" vote in the Illinois State Senate is a no vote with a speech attached.
Essentially, the entire night amounted to a large attack on Obama and a well placed counter attack to the media which has been simply exercising its first ammendment rights.
What should this tell Libertarians? The usefulness of the Republican Party in the pursuit of liberty is now simply a cliche. When a party must use insistent negative attacks to mobilize its base the party is in sad shape. Although the Republicans are now possibly more energized, they basically announced the death of the true original message of the party. Issues were only touched, mainly correllating to Palin's supposed great pipeline that is being created in Alaska. Is this what we want as libertarians? A party that only talks about issues after it is done talking about the other party?
No.
