Amending the Constitution
I'm a firm believer that the future holds an intensification of the polarization of American politics and eventually some sort of realignment. Either we'll see the secession of several states or the consensus of the nation being constitutionally protected through a series of amendments. This is based on my belief that most of the polarization comes from social issues and we won't really resolve this until we find a set of social policies that can pass through the amendment process. But James Buchanan, over at the new blog Cato Unbound, has a list of other amendments. There's the good old balanced budget amendment. Another one would limit government's ability to adopt discriminatory programs, with a definition that would view support of certain sectors of the economy as discriminatory. And finally, there's a proposal for 'clarification' of the Commerce Clause.
