News of the blogs

Sometimes I participate on this blog just for the fun of the debate, but sometimes I want to believe that all this analysis could actually influence something. When I feel like that (or just want some fresh voices to debate), I take the ideas that I've developed here and bring them to another community where I think they could get a fair hearing. For those of you with similar interests, I have some thoughts on three blogging communities:

  1. The Great Orange Satan: Like it or not, Daily Kos is the biggest political discussion site around. They are also an explicitly partisan Democratic site, which should give us some sort of opening there. I've been willing to put up with the all too common asses over there in order to find the occasional open mind. However, even some dedicated contributors get peeved at the the site's conformity with Democratic Party propaganda (see khin's Why I Am Leaving Daily Kos – Public Option Bait and Switch). One of khin's gripes is with the comment hiding system at DailyKos. I think that I recently suffered some annoyance and confusion at the hands of that system because I apparently irritated the ubiquitous and petty enforcers in that system. Here's the story: after picking apart the arguments of a sparring-troll who equated progressive taxation with wealth redistribution, I commented that I am not an advocate of wealth redistribution and would prefer to eliminate the personal income tax, but my comment was quickly hidden--even from me because apparently only "trusted" users can see hidden comments (leaving me in the dark about why the comment had disappeared).
  2. The Seminal at FireDogLake: FDL is a staple of the liberal blogosphere. It has some main blooggers, but this community blog is somewhat separate and the discussion is apparently more sophisticated than what you find at Daily Kos. I saw no description of what topics or viewpoints are welcomed there, so I can only take their main bloggers as a guide of what to expect.
  3. Pffugee camp: This site has even less of a description than FDL, but their front page seems to be covered with irreverent anti-war postings. If you look at their blogroll (they call it "Cliques ci dessous"), they seem to favor radical socialist and anti-war sites.

As far as I can tell, all three of these sites permit all members to post diaries and comments, so they may be good places to cross post essays that would interest those groups. I had previously had some good discussions at SwordsCrossed, but it's membership seems to have dropped below critical mass -- perhaps because too much debate was just regurgitation of partisan talking points. Another general purpose debate site is The Forvm, but they also seem to be inundated with partisan hacks.

p.s. Not too long ago I scoured the conservative web for places where I could find thoughtful conservatives to debate. RedState and the America Thinker were a disappointment (I'm not even going to touch the personality-centered blogs such as Malkin's). I hate to admit that Pat Buchanan's American Conservative actually seemed to be the best to me.

FDL vs. DailyKos

The divide between FDL and DailyKos is obvious but not one I can put my finger on. I think, on the whole, FDL is a far more consistently "liberal" or "progressive" institution that doesn't get into the tiny details of partisan cheerleading that Daily Kos is obsessed with.

the spotlight project

I noticed that at FDL, each story has a link to the spotlight project, which looks like a clever way of bringing good blog posts to the attention of news professionals.

Other than that, the FDL interface is not as good as DKos'. The comments aren't organized as clearly and there is no way to quickly check for responses to your comments.

Pffugee camp seems to use the same system as DailyKos.

Pffugee CAmp

I'm a little confused by the community at Pffugee CAmp -- sometimes they seem to be writing in code.

Other Blogs

I've participated a bit at Swords Crossed for a while, but that blog looks to have declined somewhat. Other than that, I haven't participated much anywhere else, and probably won't. Hell, I've banned from radGeek, for apparently, what i wrote over, here, with respect to pornography...
