Patriot Act "Extension"
You may not have noticed, but Congress recently passed a one year "extension" of certain Patriot Act provisions. Because you see they were totally caught off guard that the expiration date for the provisions was coming up so soon! More from Reason here.
I saw some comments at the time of the passage in the House mocking the idea of libertarian Democrats, since this is obviously occurring under a Democratic Congress and White House. But while this sailed easily through the Senate, most of the objections in the House came from Democrats, not Republicans.
Following up on the mini-scorecard I've been tracking, I think this is a good vote to throw into the mix. I had previously tracked a rather simple scorecard that included a pro-2nd Amendment vote, an anti-bailout vote, and a pro-Afghanistan exit strategy vote. I think all three are voters where we can reasonably expect a Democrat or Republican with libertarian-leaning tendencies to make the right choice.
After those three votes I came up with:
Democrats (16): Costello (IL), Dahlkemper (PA), DeFazio (OR), Driehaus (OH), Grayson (FL), Heinrich (NM), Hill (IN), Hodes (NH), Kagen (WI), Maffei (NY), Massa (NY), Michaud (ME), Perriello (VA), Schrader (OR), Walz (MN), and Welch (VT).
Republicans (7): Coble (NC), Duncan (TN), Johnson (IL), Jones (NC), Paul (TX), Rohrabacher (CA), and Whitfield (KY).
So with the Patriot Act vote included, we end up with 11:
Democrats (7): Costello (IL), DeFazio (OR), Kagen (WI), Maffei (NY), Michaud (ME), Perriello (VA), and Welch (VT).
Republicans (4): Duncan (TN), Johnson (IL), Jones (NC), and Paul (TX)
Chaffetz of Utah originally voted against the Afghanistan exit strategy, but has since come out calling for withdrawal. He's been on the right side of every other vote, so I think he can get an honorable mention.
With these four votes we have two civil liberties votes (2nd Amendment, Patriot Act), a foreign affairs one (Afghanistan), and an anti-corporatist vote (bailout). I'm trying to find votes that might not have heavy partisan pressures associated with them, unlike the health care vote for example. Any other holes you'd like to see filled?
