Richardson Backs Medical Marijuana

Perhaps Governor Bill Richardson has been listening to some advice from David Friedman?

In an unforeseen move, Gov. Bill Richardson on Wednesday night said he will include a medical-marijuana bill on his agenda this legislative session .

The governor’s decision surprised drug-law-reform advocates, who had been disheartened by Richardson’s statement earlier this week that there wouldn’t be enough time in an already packed 30-day session to take on the measure.

House Speaker Ben Luján , DNambé , said before the session started that he had asked Richardson not to include medical marijuana on his call, saying there wasn’t enough time.

But on Wednesday night, Richardson said in a news release, “After speaking with many seriously ill New Mexicans, I have decided to include this bill on my call. This issue is too important, and there are too many New Mexicans suffering to delay this issue any further.”

Good to see Richardson pushing this issue.

wow... has any other *governor* endorsed medical marijuana?

Other Governors . . .

California and Montana approved medical marijuana through a referendum. Rhode Island adopted it over the veto of the Republican Governor. I'm assuming that some Governors must have supported it elsewhere where it became law through legislative action. The Republican Governor of Maryland, for example, supports medical marijuana IIRC. If he sticks on in 2006, which seems unlikely, I like him for a VP pick in 2008 if the Republicans want to shift back to being a small government party.

Ehrlich on MedMJ

I remember Ehrlich (MD gov) supporting a law allowing states to decide on medical MJ laws, when he was in Congress. I interpreted it as supporting "state's rights" rather than "med MJ"

Ehrlich signed the state's Medical Marijuana laws as Governor. He's been very good on this issue overall.
