Counter tax policy

Johnathan Rauch's Stoking The Beast in the current Atlantic magazine is attracting attention in the blogosphere, including from me (unsurprisingly the original paper is more interesting).

Any special implcations for libertarian Democrats? Don't rule out Democrats who want to increase taxes, for they are unwittingly making government seem more costly, leading to less spending? Get Barney Frank to give more speeches about spending? :-)

Tax Cut Mania

That's a really good article, especially the end:

"By turning a limited-government movement into an anti-tax movement, conservatism has effectively gone into business with the Big Government that it claims to oppose. It is not starving the beast. It is fueling the beast’s appetite. And the beast has a credit card."

This helps bring support to my own agenda in selecting votes for the economic axis of the Freedom Democrats Scorecard, I avoid votes on taxes and focus instead of the issue of spending. It's something that I suggest to anyone who'd consider themselves a libertarian Democrat. By focusing on wasteful spending like the bloated military budget and corporate welfare you build up credibility with others on the left that you're not just another DINO.

Tax Cut Depression

I think Americans who are interested in "small-government" realize that the federal government needs to balance the budget before it can reduce spending, but that logic gets drowned out in the "tax cuts pay for themselves" meme. Democrats would be smart to embrace smart conservatives and libertarians like Cato because it will help them disparage flash-in-the-pan tax cutters like Grover Norquist.

What I don't understand is why our first CEO president has demonstrated a clear lack of business sense. I mean, we should have seen it coming, after his first few businesses folded faster than Superman on laundry day. Should Freedom Democrats start an investment bank to fund a "hostile takeover" of the Democratic Party machinery? Left-libertarians, out of all Dems, have the economic smarts to do it.
