Questionable Scorecards
Reason's Hit and Run blog links to a 'scorecard' from Citizens Against Government Waste. Tim Cavanaugh describes the scorecard as "votes on a list of budget-busting bills."
Reality just doesn't match up with that description though. Take at the votes in the House. They favor CAFTA, tort reform (by my count four different votes on the subject or a related issue), drilling in ANWR, and estate tax repeal. Regardless of your position on these issues, I don't think they fall under "budget-busting bills." This doesn't stop CAGW from spinning this as a pork-based scorecard.
Our goal is to applaud the members who want to protect our tax dollars and cut spending. At the same time, CAGW wants to alert the taxpaying public to those who prefer big government and using public funds for pet programs and pork-barrel spending.
I have to thank CAGW though, their list of votes did include some votes from 2005 I had overlooked that are reasonable. As we move into the election season and I turn my attention to the House Races, I may create an updated scorecard.
